The International Day of Light is a global initiative that highlights the role of light and light-based technologies across science, education, medicine, communications, culture, and sustainable development.

Southern Arizona is home to one of the world’s leading optics and photonics ecosystems, often referred to as “Optics Valley” because of its concentration of research, engineering, and light-based technology organizations.

Locally, this year’s celebration brought that mission to life through a free, hands-on STEM experience designed to make optics and photonics more tangible, engaging, and accessible.

This year’s celebration included:

  • Full-dome shows that turned complex ideas into immersive visual experiences
  • A live presentation from Dr. Poole of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
  • More than 10 hands-on demo tables exploring real-world applications of optics and photonics
  • Interactive experiences designed to spark curiosity and a sense of wonder and awe across all ages

These experiences helped make optics and photonics concepts more tangible by connecting light science to real-world technologies and applications. For many attendees, it was also the first opportunity to see how the science of light translates into careers, products, and technologies they encounter every day.
