Optics Valley, a committee of the Arizona Technology Council

Background

Optics Valley, a committee of the Arizona Technology Council, works to connect and support businesses and organizations in the optics, photonics, and astronomy industries. Its mission is to catalyze, convene and connect optics, photonics, astronomy and the supporting business interests throughout Arizona and globally. They aim to achieve this mission by:

  • Hosting educational and networking events
  • Advocating for policies that support the optics industry
  • Providing resources and assistance to businesses in the industry

Challenge

The Arizona Photonics Days scientific conference began eight years ago to meet the needs of an expanding optics and photonics community, bringing together experts, professionals, and commercial interests to a dedicated event that facilitated networking, partnership opportunities, and cross-industry collaborations. Over the years, the event has focused on five pivotal areas—Astronomy, Biomedical Technology, Laser Technology, Sensing and Metrology, and Quantum technology—highlighting innovations in both scientific research and commercial applications.

With this annual event, the Optics Valley committee aims to:

  • Raise Awareness: Elevate the profile of the annual Arizona Photonics Days event as a key gathering for professionals in optics and photonics, with an emphasis on how emerging technologies are advancing critical sectors like healthcare, quantum computing, and space exploration.
  • Promote Registration and Sponsorships: Drive participation through targeted promotions for registration and sponsorships, reinforcing the event’s role in further industry collaboration and progress.
  • Foster Industry Engagement: Facilitate interactions among scientists, business leaders, and academics, encouraging the exchange of ideas on how optics and photonics technologies are impacting real-world applications across various sectors.

Solution

Arizona Photonics Days 2025 presented the challenge of balancing budget constraints with the goal of delivering an impactful event. The Blue Canoe team developed a comprehensive strategy that focused on cost-effective promotional efforts and established strong partnerships with industry and academic institutions.

Strategic collaborations with organizations like the Arizona Technology Council, the University of Arizona, UA Tech Parks and others facilitated effective outreach to the target audience. Our social media campaign, along with targeted email and sponsor promotions, amplified the event’s visibility.

The event included technical sessions, company spotlights, and exclusive facility tours, providing both educational value and opportunities for networking and industry collaboration. With a focus on thoughtful planning, targeted outreach, and collaboration, our team helped deliver an experience that highlighted the importance of optics and photonics— facilitating this event’s contribution to the continued growth and success of the industry.

Event Highlights

  • Technical Sessions: Driving Knowledge Exchange
The core of the event was its technical sessions, where industry experts, professionals and academic researchers shared their developments in optics and photonics. These sessions were designed to showcase innovations in Astronomy, Biomedical Technology, Laser Technology, Sensing and Metrology, and Quantum Technology—five areas that are impacting industries worldwide. Attendees gained valuable insights into the latest trends, breakthroughs, and real-world applications of optics and photonics technologies.
  • Company Spotlights: Showcasing Innovation and Impact
Throughout the event, company spotlights gave leading industry players the opportunity to present their latest products, services or solutions. Companies used these brief sessions to highlight how their innovations are driving advancements in optics and photonics technologies, demonstrate their leadership, and share their vision for the future.

  • Facility Tours: Bridging Theory and Practice
A highlight of the 2025 event was the facility tours of the Grand Challenges Research Building and the Richard F. Caris Mirror Lab, both located on the University of Arizona campus in Tucson, Arizona. These tours provided attendees with an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the technology behind the world’s largest and most advanced telescope mirrors, and explored the cutting-edge research facility where groundbreaking work in quantum optics, advanced imaging, and photonics is shaping the future of science and technology. Participants had the chance to engage directly with researchers and academic leaders, gaining deeper insights into the next frontier of optics and photonics.
  • Networking Events: Building Connections for the Future
Networking was a central component of Arizona Photonics Days 2025, with multiple opportunities for attendees to connect. From networking breaks and receptions, participants were able to forge meaningful relationships with peers, industry leaders, and potential collaborators.
  • Industry and Cluster Organizations: Strengthening Industry Partnerships
The event also featured presentations from industry organizations and optics and photonics cluster groups, further enriching the experience for attendees. These organizations provided valuable insights into the state of the industry, ongoing initiatives, and strategic goals for the future. Presentations highlighted the importance of collaboration across sectors, emphasizing the role of regional clusters in advancing optics and photonics technologies, and the potential to lead industry-wide advancements.
  • Sponsor Tables: Enhancing Visibility and Engagement
In addition to the technical sessions and networking events, the sponsor tables provided a dedicated space for event sponsors to interact directly with attendees, showcasing their products, services, and technologies. Sponsors had the opportunity to engage with a targeted audience of industry professionals, academics, and business leaders, while reinforcing their commitment to the growth of the optics and photonics community.
