Visit flandrau.org/events/idl for more information, at-home materials for activities, and registration.

This annual event offers families the opportunity to discover the importance of optics and photonics in today’s world and in the future. It showcases Tucson and Arizona as a global hub for education and careers in optics, photonics and astronomy.

Zach Yentzer, Executive Director of Tucson Young Professionals and host of the Tipping Point radio show on Tucson;’s KVOI will emcee the event with activities, demonstrations and presentations from SARSEF, UA Physics Club, UArizona Student Optics Chapter, Dr. Bashar Rizk with the OSIRIS-REx mission, and Dr. Norman Hodgson with Coherent. The grand finale will be a virtual version of Flandrau’s Rocketman laser light show with spectacular laser art to the music of Elton John and Bernie Taupin.

The International Day of Light is a UNESCO global initiative to appreciate light and the role it plays in science, culture and art, education, and sustainable development, and in fields as diverse as medicine, communications, and energy. The broad theme of light allows different sectors of society worldwide to participate in activities that demonstrate how science, technology, art and culture can help achieve the goals of UNESCO – education, equality, and peace.
